Flip over any supplement bottle and below the Supplement Facts panel you’ll find a quieter list: Other Ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide. No doses, no daily values, just a string of chemistry-class words.
This list — the excipients — is where a lot of supplement anxiety lives. Entire marketing campaigns are built on scaring you about it (“NO fillers! NO magnesium stearate!”), which is a strong hint that fear sells better than the facts do.
Here’s what each category of excipient actually does, which ones deserve a second look, and how to read the list like someone who can’t be marketed to.
Why Excipients Exist at All
A capsule of vitamin D3 might contain 25 micrograms of active ingredient. That’s a speck — literally invisible at the bottom of a capsule. Something has to carry it, keep it evenly distributed so each capsule gets the same dose, move it through high-speed filling machines without clumping, and keep it stable on a shelf for two years.
That’s the whole story of excipients. They’re not padding added to cheat you; they’re the reason each pill in the bottle contains what the label says. A tablet with no binder crumbles in the bottle. A powder with no flow agent jams the machine and produces capsules with wildly inconsistent doses — which is a far bigger health concern than any flow agent.
The Main Categories, Decoded
Fillers (diluents). Add bulk so tiny doses become a pill you can handle. The common ones: microcrystalline cellulose (refined plant fiber), dicalcium phosphate (a calcium salt), rice flour, maltodextrin. All are digested or passed like ordinary food components.
Binders. Hold tablets together under pressure. Cellulose gum, povidone, starch. Without them, tablets arrive as dust.
Flow agents (anti-caking). The most feared and least deserving of it. Magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, stearic acid — they coat powder particles so material flows evenly through equipment. More on the stearate panic below.
Capsule shells. Gelatin (animal-derived — beef or pork) or hypromellose/HPMC (plant-derived cellulose, the vegetarian option). This is one line that genuinely matters if you’re vegan, vegetarian, kosher, or halal-observant.
Coatings and glazes. Make tablets easier to swallow and mask tastes. Pharmaceutical glaze, carnauba wax. Enteric coatings go further — they resist stomach acid so contents release in the intestine, which is functional for things like fish oil (fewer fishy burps) and some probiotic formulas.
Disintegrants. The opposite of binders: they swell on contact with moisture so the tablet breaks apart in your gut instead of passing through intact. Croscarmellose sodium, crospovidone. Quietly one of the most important items on the list.
Colors, flavors, sweeteners. Where the most legitimate scrutiny belongs — mostly in gummies and flavored powders. A gummy multivitamin can carry 2-3 grams of added sugar per serving, which adds up across a family and a year. Artificial colors are cosmetic and add nothing. Titanium dioxide, a whitening pigment, has drawn regulatory debate — the EU moved to phase it out of foods as a precaution — and while amounts in supplements are tiny, it’s also completely unnecessary, so it’s a fair thing to vote against with your wallet.
The Magnesium Stearate Panic, Debunked
No excipient has generated more scare content than magnesium stearate. The claims: it “coats your intestines,” “blocks absorption,” and “suppresses immune function.”
The reality is duller. Magnesium stearate is simply magnesium bound to stearic acid — a saturated fat you eat every day in beef, chocolate, and coconut oil. A capsule contains roughly 1% or less magnesium stearate, a few milligrams. Your dinner delivers thousands of times more stearic acid than a supplement ever will.
The immune-suppression claim traces back to a decades-old lab study that soaked isolated mouse cells in stearic acid concentrations no human bloodstream would ever see — mouse cells that, unlike human T-cells, can’t process stearic acid properly in the first place. The absorption claim stems from the fact that stearate can slightly slow (not block) tablet dissolution in lab tests — a manufacturing quality variable, not a health hazard, and one dissolution standards already account for.
There is no credible evidence of harm at supplemental amounts. Brands advertising “stearate-free” aren’t protecting you; they’re marketing to a fear another marketer invented. When “Other Ingredients” Actually Matter
Read the list for these, in order of real-world importance:
- Allergens. Soy (lecithin), dairy (lactose as a filler), wheat, shellfish (glucosamine sourcing), fish. US labeling law requires major allergens to be declared — the “Contains:” line below the ingredients is your fast check.
- Animal-derived ingredients. Gelatin capsules and softgels are the big one for vegans and vegetarians. Look for “vegetable capsule” or HPMC.
- Sugar and sugar alcohols. Gummies and chewables mainly. Sugar alcohols like sorbitol and xylitol can cause digestive upset in quantity.
- Things you’re personally sensitive to. Some people genuinely react to specific dyes or to large amounts of certain fillers. If a supplement reliably upsets your stomach, comparing excipient lists between brands sometimes solves it — a trick worth trying with magnesium products, where the mineral form usually gets blamed for what a filler occasionally caused.
- Sheer excipient-to-active ratio. Not a safety issue, but if a “premium” product is mostly rice flour with a sprinkle of actives, you’re paying herb prices for filler. The Supplement Facts panel doses tell you this, not the excipient list itself.
What a “Clean Label” Is Worth
“No fillers, no binders, no excipients” sounds virtuous, but it’s worth being clear-eyed about the trade. Excipient-free products are usually loose powders (fine, but you’re now measuring doses with a scoop and your own consistency) or oversized capsules of pure ingredient (fine, if the ingredient flows and doses accurately without help — not all do).
There’s nothing wrong with minimal formulas, and some excellent products are exactly that. But a short ingredient list tells you nothing about the two things that actually determine quality: whether the active ingredient is the form and dose the research supports, and whether an independent lab has verified the contents. A third-party tested product with four boring excipients beats an untested “pure” product every time. That’s where your skepticism earns real returns — not on the flow agent.

Excipients are the unglamorous engineering that makes accurate, stable supplements possible, and virtually all of them are benign at the milligram amounts used. Read the “Other Ingredients” line for allergens, gelatin, and added sugar — the things that genuinely affect you — and let the magnesium stearate panic go. Then spend that reclaimed attention on what matters: evidence-supported forms, honest doses, and third-party testing.
