The name gives it away. “Pantothenic” comes from the Greek pantothen, meaning “from everywhere,” and the scientists who isolated it in the 1930s chose that word because they found the vitamin in practically every food they tested. Nearly a century later, that is still the most important fact about vitamin B5: unless you are severely malnourished, you are getting enough.
That has not stopped it from being sold as an anti-stress vitamin, an acne remedy, a hair and skin nutrient, and a cholesterol aid, often in doses fifty to a hundred times what your body actually uses. This guide covers what pantothenic acid does, how much you need, where it comes from, and what the evidence really says about the claims on the label.
What Pantothenic Acid Does
Vitamin B5 has one job that matters above all others. It is the essential building block of coenzyme A, a molecule that every cell in your body uses constantly. Coenzyme A is the carrier that delivers two-carbon units into the machinery of metabolism, and its most famous form, acetyl-CoA, is the entry point for burning carbohydrates, fats, and some amino acids for energy. Beyond energy, coenzyme A is required for:
- Building and breaking down fatty acids. Both directions of fat metabolism depend on it.
- Making cholesterol and steroid hormones. Cortisol, sex hormones, and vitamin D all start from cholesterol, which starts from acetyl-CoA.
- Making acetylcholine. The neurotransmitter used at every muscle-nerve junction and widely in the brain is built from acetyl-CoA and choline.
- Making heme. The iron-carrying part of hemoglobin.
- Protein acetylation. A chemical tag that switches proteins and genes on and off.
Pantothenic acid is also part of a second molecule, acyl carrier protein, which is central to fatty acid synthesis. Between the two, B5 touches almost every metabolic pathway you can name. That breadth is the source of both its genuine importance and the exaggerated claims made for it.
Here is the catch that supplement marketing skips: being required for a process is not the same as boosting it. Your cells need enough B5 to make enough coenzyme A. Once they have that, extra pantothenic acid does not make more coenzyme A, more energy, or more hormones. The pathway is limited by other things.
How Much You Need
There is no Recommended Dietary Allowance for pantothenic acid, because the data needed to set one precisely do not exist. Instead, the Institute of Medicine set an Adequate Intake based on what healthy populations actually consume:

Surveys of typical Western diets consistently find intakes in the range of 4 to 7 mg per day, which is why deficiency is so rare. You do not have to try.
There is no tolerable upper limit. The reviewers looked for evidence of harm at high intakes and found essentially none, so they declined to set a ceiling. That is unusual among vitamins and it is a fair reason to consider B5 very safe. It is not a reason to take a lot of it. Food Sources
Because it is everywhere, almost any reasonable diet covers B5. The densest sources per serving are:
- Beef liver (a single 3 oz serving delivers more than the daily target)
- Sunflower seeds
- Shiitake and other mushrooms
- Avocado
- Chicken and turkey
- Salmon and trout
- Eggs
- Lentils and split peas
- Sweet potato
- Whole grains, including brown rice and oats
- Milk and yogurt
Two processing notes. Refining grains strips a large share of their pantothenic acid, and unlike some B vitamins it is not routinely added back through enrichment, so whole grains are meaningfully better sources than white flour. Heat and water also cost you some: canning, prolonged boiling, and freezing can reduce B5 content, sometimes substantially. Neither of these matters much for someone eating a varied diet, but they explain why intakes are lower in people relying heavily on processed food.
What Deficiency Looks Like
Genuine pantothenic acid deficiency has been documented mainly in two settings: severely malnourished prisoners of war, and experimental studies where volunteers were fed a synthetic diet lacking B5, sometimes with a compound that blocks it. The classic sign was “burning feet syndrome,” a painful tingling and burning sensation in the feet, along with fatigue, headache, irritability, sleep disturbance, and digestive complaints.
Outside those extreme conditions, isolated B5 deficiency is essentially never seen. When it turns up at all, it comes bundled with deficiencies of other B vitamins in people with alcohol use disorder, severe malabsorption, or very restricted diets, which is why it is typically addressed with a B-complex rather than B5 alone. The nonspecific symptoms listed above overlap with dozens of other causes, so feeling tired is not evidence of low B5.
The Claims, Examined
“The anti-stress vitamin”
This is the oldest and most persistent B5 claim, and it has a real origin. In animal studies from the mid-twentieth century, pantothenic acid deficiency impaired adrenal gland function and reduced the ability to produce cortisol under stress. The vitamin is genuinely necessary for steroid hormone synthesis.
But notice the direction of that finding. Deficiency impairs the adrenal response. Nobody has shown that giving extra B5 to well-nourished humans improves stress tolerance, lowers cortisol, or does anything to the adrenal glands at all. The step from “the adrenals need it” to “more of it supports your adrenals” is exactly the kind of leap this site exists to catch. If you are dealing with stress, the well-supported levers are sleep, exercise, and, where appropriate, professional support. B5 megadoses are not on the list.
Acne
A small placebo-controlled trial reported fewer facial blemishes in adults taking a pantothenic acid-based supplement at around 2 grams per day for twelve weeks. Before that, a 1990s report described very high doses, on the order of 10 grams per day, in an uncontrolled case series. The proposed mechanism involves coenzyme A’s role in fat metabolism in the skin.
That is one small trial and one uncontrolled report. It is enough to call the idea interesting and not remotely enough to call it established. The evidence does not support using B5 in place of care from a dermatologist, and the doses involved are far above anything with safety data. If you are curious, discuss it with a clinician rather than experimenting on your own.
Hair and skin
Pantothenic acid shows up in shampoos and lotions as dexpanthenol or “pro-vitamin B5.” Topically, it acts as a humectant, drawing water into the hair shaft or skin surface, which is why it makes hair feel softer. That is a cosmetic effect, not a nutritional one. There is no evidence that swallowing B5 grows hair, and the same is true of its cousin biotin in people who are not deficient. Wound-healing claims rest on animal and topical studies, not oral supplementation.
Cholesterol
Here the confusion is between two different compounds. Pantethine is a derivative of pantothenic acid, and a number of small trials found that 600 to 900 mg per day modestly changed some blood lipid markers over several months. Pantothenic acid itself has not shown this effect. If you see cholesterol claims on a B5 bottle, check which compound you are looking at. Either way, lipid management is a clinical conversation, not a supplement-aisle decision.
Energy
Every B vitamin gets sold for energy, and the logic is always the same: it is required for energy metabolism, therefore more of it gives you more energy. As explained above, that logic fails once you are replete. If a B-complex makes you feel better, it is far more likely that you were low in something else in it, most often B12 or folate, than that you needed more B5.
If You Do Supplement
Most people never need to. The reasonable exceptions are people on very restricted diets, people with malabsorption conditions, and people whose clinician has flagged a broader B vitamin shortfall. In those cases, a B-complex providing 10 to 50 mg of pantothenic acid is more than sufficient and covers the other B vitamins that tend to be low at the same time.
Standalone pantothenic acid supplements usually come as calcium pantothenate in 250 to 500 mg capsules. Take it with food to reduce the chance of stomach upset. Because it is water-soluble and clears within hours, splitting a larger dose across the day makes more sense than taking it all at once, though again, there is little evidence that larger doses do anything at all. Evening dosing occasionally causes trouble sleeping in people sensitive to B vitamins, so morning or midday is the usual recommendation.
Safety
Pantothenic acid has one of the cleanest safety records among vitamins:
- No upper limit has been set because no toxicity has been reliably documented.
- Very high doses, above roughly 10 grams per day, may cause diarrhea and water retention.
- Drug interactions are minimal. One theoretical concern: pantothenic acid and biotin share the same intestinal transporter, so very high doses of one might reduce absorption of the other. This is not a practical issue at normal intakes.
- Pregnancy and nursing: the Adequate Intake levels of 6 and 7 mg are appropriate and typically met through diet and a prenatal. High-dose supplementation has not been studied in pregnancy and there is no reason to use it.
- Medical conditions: people with kidney disease should be cautious with high-dose supplements of any kind and should discuss them with their care team.
Bottom line
Vitamin B5 is essential, it is central to how your cells make energy and hormones, and you are almost certainly getting enough of it from food without trying. The stress, acne, hair, and energy claims rest on deficiency studies, animal data, or single small trials, none of which show that extra B5 helps someone who is already replete. It is safe enough that supplementing is unlikely to hurt, and unnecessary enough that it is unlikely to help. Put the money toward whole grains, eggs, and mushrooms instead.
