Walk into any herb shop and you’ll face the same fork in the road: the herb you came for, available as capsules on one shelf and as a small amber dropper bottle on the other. The dropper bottle usually costs more per dose, comes with confident claims about “superior absorption,” and carries a label full of cryptic notation — 1:5, 45% ABV, “fresh plant extract.”
Tinctures are one of the oldest delivery formats in herbalism, and they’re neither the potent secret their fans suggest nor the alcohol-soaked gimmick their critics claim. This guide decodes the label, does the alcohol math, and lays out honestly when a tincture is the better tool — and when a capsule beats it.
What a Tincture Actually Is
A tincture is an herb extracted by soaking (macerating) in a mixture of alcohol and water, typically for several weeks, then pressed and filtered. The alcohol does two jobs: it dissolves plant constituents that water alone extracts poorly — resins, many alkaloids, some terpenes — and it preserves the result, giving tinctures a shelf life of several years versus months for dried herb.
The key label notation is the extraction ratio:
- 1:5 means one part herb (by weight) to five parts liquid — the traditional standard for dried herb.
- 1:2 or 1:1 means a more concentrated preparation, usually made from fresh plant material. Fresh-plant ratios look stronger on paper but the fresh herb is mostly water, so a fresh 1:2 and a dried 1:5 can be closer in strength than the numbers suggest.
- Alcohol percentage (25-60% typically, sometimes higher for resinous plants) reflects what the herbalist judged necessary to extract that particular plant, not potency.
This is a fundamentally different philosophy from the standardized extracts found in most capsules, which are concentrated to a guaranteed percentage of a marker compound. A tincture is a whole-plant snapshot of variable strength; a standardized extract is a chemically defined product. Neither is automatically superior — but nearly all clinical trials use standardized extracts, which matters when you want your dose to match the research.
Dosing: What the Dropper Actually Delivers
Tincture dosing is where beginners get lost, because everything is in drops and milliliters instead of milligrams.
Useful anchors:
- A standard dropper squeeze delivers roughly 0.5-1 mL, and 1 mL is about 20-30 drops depending on the liquid.
- Common traditional dosing for a 1:5 dried-herb tincture runs 1-3 mL, one to three times daily — but this varies enormously by herb, and the label’s suggested serving is the starting point, not a universal rule.
- The arithmetic worth doing: 2 mL of a 1:5 tincture represents about 0.4 g of the original herb. A single capsule often contains 300-500 mg of concentrated extract. The dropper bottle is frequently the less potent option per dose, which is worth remembering next time a label implies otherwise.
Practical mechanics: dilute the dose in a small amount of water rather than dropping it neat under your tongue (high-proof tinctures sting), and take bitter digestive herbs 10-15 minutes before meals — for bitters, tasting the preparation is the point, and this is one place tea and liquid formats genuinely earn their keep.
The Absorption Claim, Examined
The standard sales pitch is that tinctures “absorb sublingually, bypassing digestion” and start working in minutes while capsules “lose potency to stomach acid.”
The honest assessment: mostly unsupported. True sublingual absorption works for small, lipid-friendly molecules held under the tongue for an extended time — that’s why it’s used for certain medications. A squirt of tincture swished for a few seconds and swallowed is absorbed the ordinary way, through the gut. There’s no good comparative human research showing tinctures produce meaningfully higher blood levels of herbal constituents than equivalent capsule doses, and for some constituent classes, a well-made extract in a capsule delivers far more of the target compound per dose.
What liquids genuinely offer is subtler: no capsule to break down (a modest head start of minutes, relevant mostly if you have trouble swallowing pills), easy dose titration, and the taste-mediated effects that matter for bitters. Those are real advantages. “Bypasses digestion” is not.
The Alcohol Question
Alcohol content alarms people, so it deserves actual numbers. A 2 mL dose of a 40% tincture contains about 0.8 mL of pure ethanol. A standard drink contains roughly 18 mL. So a typical tincture dose delivers about 1/20th of a standard drink — comparable to the residual alcohol in a ripe banana or a serving of some fermented foods.
For most adults, that’s toxicologically trivial. It still matters for some people:

- Liver disease, where both the alcohol and many herbs themselves warrant medical guidance.
- Children, for whom alcohol-based preparations are generally inappropriate without professional advice.
- Disulfiram and metronidazole — medications that react with even small alcohol amounts.
The alcohol-free alternative is a glycerite (glycerin-based extract). Glycerin is a gentler solvent — fine for many delicate herbs like lemon balm, noticeably weaker for resins and many alkaloid-rich plants — and glycerites have shorter shelf lives. Vinegar extracts (acetracts) are the third traditional option, weaker still, and closer to food than medicine.
When Each Format Wins
Choose a tincture when:
- You’re using bitters or aromatic digestive herbs, where taste is part of the mechanism.
- You want to titrate gradually — starting low and stepping up with a nervine like valerian or lemon balm is far easier by the drop than by the capsule.
- You take something as-needed and irregularly and want a format that keeps for years.
- Swallowing pills is a genuine problem.
Choose capsules or tablets when:
- You want to match a studied dose — trials of herbs like milk thistle or ashwagandha used standardized extracts at defined milligram doses, and a tincture can’t replicate that with any precision.
- The herb tastes vile and isn’t a bitter (most people’s echinacea compliance survives capsules better).
- You need consistent daily dosing for a long-term protocol.
- Alcohol is off the table.
One caution that applies to both formats: tinctures are covered by the same loose regulatory regime as every other supplement, and small-batch products vary widely. The same quality signals apply — clear ratio and alcohol labeling, identified plant species and part, and ideally third-party testing. A romantic label is not a quality control program.
Safety Notes
The safety profile of a tincture is, first and foremost, the safety profile of the herb in it — extraction format doesn’t neutralize interactions.
