Heavy Metals in Supplements Explained: What's Actually in Your Scoop

The contaminant question every supplement buyer should ask, and how to answer it.

Why This Keeps Making Headlines

Every year or two, a consumer testing group publishes a report showing measurable lead in protein powders, cadmium in chocolate-flavored products, or arsenic in a popular herbal blend. The coverage tends to swing between “your supplements are poisoning you” and “nothing to see here.” Neither is accurate.

The more useful framing is this: heavy metals are nearly everywhere in the food supply at low levels, and supplements are one more source added on top. Whether a given product matters depends on how much it contains per serving, how many servings you take, and for how long. This guide explains where the metals come from, which products carry the most risk, and how to shop so it stops being a worry.

The Four Metals That Matter

“Heavy metals” is a loose term. In supplement testing, it almost always refers to four elements:

  • Lead. It has no known biological role and no identified safe level for children. Long-term exposure is associated with effects on the nervous system, blood pressure, and kidneys. Developing brains are the most sensitive.
  • Cadmium. It builds up in the kidneys over decades, and long-term exposure is associated with kidney and bone effects. Cacao, rice, and leafy plants absorb it readily from soil.
  • Arsenic. Inorganic arsenic, the more harmful form, is common in rice and some seaweeds. Organic forms found in seafood are considered much less toxic, which is why good test reports list them separately.
  • Mercury. The main concern is methylmercury, which builds up in large predatory fish. Well-made fish oils are distilled, which removes most of it.

Where They Come From

In most cases the metals weren’t added on purpose. They arrive in the raw ingredients:

  1. Soil uptake. Plants pull minerals from the ground, including the ones you don’t want. Rice, cacao, leafy greens, and root crops grown in contaminated or naturally metal-rich soil carry more.
  2. Concentration. Many supplements are dried or concentrated plants. Turning a large amount of greens into one scoop concentrates their contaminants along with their nutrients.
  3. Marine sources. Seaweeds like kelp and sea moss absorb arsenic and other elements from seawater. (Their iodine content can also be wildly inconsistent, which we covered in our sea moss myth-buster.)
  4. Mineral-rich raw materials. Clays, some calcium sources, and resin-based products like shilajit can carry metals naturally. Unpurified shilajit is a particular concern.
  5. Intentional inclusion. Some traditional preparations, notably certain Ayurvedic rasa shastra formulas, deliberately include metals or minerals as ingredients. Our Ayurvedic herbs guide covers why these are a separate category from single-herb extracts.

Which Products Carry the Most Risk

Risk isn’t evenly spread across the supplement aisle. A rough ranking:

Higher scrutiny

  • Plant-based protein powders (rice, pea, hemp, and blends). They’re consumed in large daily amounts, often 30 g or more, and often every day. Chocolate flavors add cacao-derived cadmium and lead.
  • Greens and “superfood” powders, which contain concentrated leafy and algae ingredients
  • Kelp, sea moss, and other seaweed supplements
  • Shilajit, especially raw or unverified products
  • Imported traditional remedies without clear ingredient labeling
  • Clay-based “detox” products such as bentonite

Moderate scrutiny

  • Spirulina and chlorella. Contamination varies a lot by source.
  • Botanical extracts in general. Standardized extracts from reputable manufacturers tend to test better than raw powdered herbs.

Lower concern

  • Purified single compounds such as creatine monohydrate, vitamin C, magnesium glycinate, and most isolated vitamins. There’s little plant material to carry contaminants.

None of this means plant protein is unsafe. It means brand selection matters more for these products than for a bottle of vitamin C.

How Much Is Too Much?

This is where most headlines fall apart. A report says a product “contains lead” without saying whether that’s 0.2 mcg or 20 mcg per serving, and those numbers mean very different things.

The US FDA has also set interim reference levels for lead from food: about 2.2 mcg/day for young children and 8.8 mcg/day for people who could become pregnant. These aren’t safe thresholds. They’re screening benchmarks meant to flag exposures worth reducing.

About Prop 65 warnings. California’s thresholds are set far below levels where harm has been observed, and many ordinary foods would exceed them. A Prop 65 label means the product can exceed a very cautious bar. It doesn’t mean the product is dangerous. That said, if two similar products differ only in whether they carry the warning, pick the one without it.

Think in totals. Your diet already contributes background amounts of these metals. A shake with 1-2 mcg of lead is a small addition. Two scoops a day of a plant protein, plus a greens powder, plus a cacao drink, can add up to a meaningful share of a reference level. Daily, long-term use is what matters.

How to Choose Cleaner Products

  1. Look for independent certification. NSF Certified for Sport, USP Verified, and Informed Choice/Informed Sport all include contaminant testing. Our third-party testing guide explains what each seal does and doesn’t cover.
  2. Ask for the certificate of analysis (CoA). Reputable brands will share a lot-specific CoA listing lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury, ideally measured by ICP-MS (the standard lab method) and reported per serving. If a company won’t share test results, that’s worth knowing.
  3. Read “non-detect” carefully. A result of “ND” only means the amount was below the lab’s detection limit. A good CoA states what that limit is.
  4. Rotate your protein sources. If you use protein powder daily, switching between whey and plant sources, or between brands, avoids taking in the same contaminant profile every day.
  5. Prefer unflavored or vanilla over chocolate if cadmium is a concern.
  6. Be skeptical of vague origins for herbs, shilajit, and traditional formulas. Products without full ingredient disclosure, or bought from unverified online sellers, carry the most risk.
  7. Use fewer products. Each additional powder is another source. A simpler stack is easier to vet.

Special Caution Groups

  • Pregnancy and nursing: Lead crosses the placenta, and there’s no known safe level for fetal brain development. Stick with well-tested prenatal products and avoid seaweed supplements, shilajit, and traditional remedies with uncertain composition unless your obstetric provider approves them.
  • Children: Their smaller body weight and developing nervous systems make them more vulnerable. Protein powders and greens powders are rarely necessary for kids.
  • People with kidney disease: Reduced kidney function can affect how the body handles some metals. Discuss any powdered or herbal supplement with your care team.

If you’re worried about exposure, don’t turn to “heavy metal detox” supplements. Most are unproven, and some chelating agents carry real risks. A clinician can order a blood lead test and advise you properly.

Bottom Line

Trace heavy metals in supplements are common, usually unintentional, and in most well-made products present at small amounts. The risk comes from high-contamination categories used daily for years: plant proteins, greens powders, seaweed, shilajit, and poorly documented traditional remedies. Check per-serving numbers rather than reacting to headlines, choose third-party-certified brands or ones that publish lot-specific test results, keep your stack simple, and be most cautious during pregnancy and for children.
