What an Enteric Coating Is
“Enteric” comes from the Greek for intestine. An enteric coating is a thin polymer film sprayed onto a tablet or capsule that is chemically designed to be insoluble in acid and soluble at higher pH.
Your stomach sits at roughly pH 1.5–3.5 — strongly acidic. Once material passes the pyloric valve into the duodenum, bicarbonate from the pancreas neutralizes it, and pH climbs into the 5.5–7 range as you move down the small intestine. Enteric polymers are formulated to stay closed in the first environment and dissolve in the second.
The result is a supplement that passes through the stomach essentially untouched and releases its contents further downstream. On labels you’ll see this described as enteric-coated, delayed-release or DR, acid-resistant, or occasionally gastro-resistant. These aren’t strictly interchangeable terms — “delayed-release” is a broader category that includes non-enteric mechanisms — but on supplement bottles they’re used loosely and usually mean the same thing.
The Three Problems It Solves
Enteric coating is not a general upgrade. It’s a targeted fix, and it’s worth knowing which of the three problems your supplement actually has.
1. Protecting the ingredient from your stomach
Some active compounds are damaged by acid. Digestive enzyme preparations — particularly lipase and protease blends intended to act in the small intestine — lose activity in a low-pH environment. Live probiotic organisms face the same gauntlet: a meaningful fraction of many strains don’t survive gastric transit.
2. Protecting your stomach from the ingredient
This one is underrated and is the most reliable everyday benefit. Fish oil that dissolves in the stomach produces the notorious fishy repeat and, for some people, reflux — a major reason people quit omega-3 supplements entirely. An enteric shell moves that release downstream and largely eliminates the problem. Garlic and some concentrated herbal oils create similar irritation.
3. Delivering something to a target site
This is where the strongest evidence lives. Peppermint oil relaxes smooth muscle. Released in the stomach, it can relax the lower esophageal sphincter and cause heartburn — the opposite of helpful. Released in the small intestine, it reaches the tissue it’s meant to act on. Controlled trials of enteric-coated peppermint oil for gut symptoms have generally used this format specifically because the uncoated version fails on both counts.
Where the Evidence Is Genuinely Good
Enteric peppermint oil. This is the clearest case. A reasonable body of controlled research supports enteric-coated peppermint oil for abdominal discomfort and bloating patterns, and the trials use enteric formulations by design. Typical doses in research have been in the range of 180–225 mg of the oil, two to three times daily, taken 30–60 minutes before meals. Uncoated peppermint oil capsules are not a substitute here.
Enteric fish oil for tolerability. The evidence that it improves absorption of EPA and DHA is thin and inconsistent. The evidence that it reduces burping and reflux is much more convincing, mostly because it’s an easily observed effect. If fishy repeat is why you stopped taking fish oil, the coating is buying you adherence — which is worth real money.
Digestive enzymes intended to work distally. For blends meant to act in the small intestine rather than the stomach, acid protection is mechanistically sensible. Note that not all enzyme products want this — some are formulated to start working on food in the stomach, and coating those would be counterproductive. Where It’s Oversold
“Enteric-coated means better absorbed.” Not automatically, and sometimes the reverse. A coating that opens later means the contents have less small intestine left to be absorbed across. For nutrients absorbed high in the duodenum — iron and calcium among them — delayed release can reduce uptake. If a product is enteric-coated without a stated reason, that’s a question, not a feature.
Coating quality varies, and so do guts. Real-world dissolution depends on gastric emptying rate, whether you ate, and individual pH variation. A coating validated in a lab beaker doesn’t guarantee identical behavior in every person on every day. Some products dissolve early; some pass through more intact than intended.
Probiotics. The coating is one survival strategy among several, and it’s often not the decisive one. Spore-forming organisms such as Bacillus coagulans are naturally acid-resistant and don’t need a shell. Some well-studied Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains survive gastric transit adequately when taken with food, which buffers stomach acid at little cost. Microencapsulation at the particle level is another approach. How to Use Enteric Products Correctly
A few rules that people break constantly:
- Do not crush, chew, split, or open them. This is the single most common error. Breaking the shell dumps the contents straight into your stomach and eliminates every benefit you paid for. If you can’t swallow the capsule whole, choose a different format rather than opening it.
- Take with a full glass of water and stay upright for a few minutes. An enteric tablet that lodges in the esophagus is uncomfortable and won’t release where it should.
- Follow the product’s food instructions rather than a general rule. Enteric peppermint oil is typically taken before meals. Enteric fish oil is usually taken with a meal, since dietary fat aids absorption of the omega-3s once released.
- Expect a delay. Onset is later than an uncoated version by design. That’s the mechanism working, not the product failing.
- Watch for interactions with acid reducers. Proton pump inhibitors, H2 blockers, and antacids raise stomach pH substantially. Under a PPI, a coating designed to open at pH 5.5 may open in the stomach. If you take daily acid-reducing medication, the enteric premium may be buying you less than the label implies — worth raising with your prescriber or pharmacist. Reading the Label
Look for a stated reason, not just the word. Good products say what the coating is protecting and why. Vague products just print “enteric-coated” in a starburst.
Check that the coating material is disclosed. Common ones include hypromellose phthalate, cellulose acetate phthalate, methacrylic acid copolymers, and shellac. If you avoid animal-derived ingredients, note that shellac is insect-derived. Some excipients in coatings are also worth a glance if you have sensitivities.
Finally, compare cost per dose against the actual problem you’re solving. Paying 40% more to stop fishy burps is a good trade if fishy burps are the reason you quit. Safety Notes
Enteric coatings are widely used and generally well tolerated, but a few situations deserve care. People with delayed gastric emptying may have unpredictable release timing. Anyone who has had gastrointestinal surgery affecting stomach or intestinal pH should check with their care team before relying on pH-dependent products. And enteric coatings on medications — enteric aspirin being the common example — involve considerations well beyond a supplement guide’s scope; those decisions belong to your prescriber, not to a bottle comparison.

Bottom Line
Enteric coating is real technology that solves three specific problems: acid-fragile ingredients, stomach irritation, and target-site delivery. It is worth paying for with peppermint oil (where the research itself uses it), with fish oil if burping is what makes you skip doses, and with enzyme blends meant to act downstream. It is usually not worth a premium on a general multivitamin, on minerals absorbed early in the small intestine, or on a probiotic where strain choice and verified counts do more work than the shell.
