Ayurvedic Herbs Explained: What Holds Up to Modern Research

Thousands of years of tradition, a handful of solid trials, and one quality problem you can't ignore.

What Ayurveda Is, and Isn’t

Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine that developed in the Indian subcontinent over thousands of years. It’s still widely practiced in India and Nepal, and its herbs have become some of the best-selling supplements in the West. Ashwagandha, turmeric, and holy basil are all Ayurvedic staples.

The traditional framework centers on three doshas (constitutional types, often translated as air, fire, and earth/water) and on restoring balance through diet, routine, and herbs, which are usually combined in complex formulas. Practitioners may assess patients through pulse reading and constitution rather than lab tests.

Two things can be true at once:

  1. The framework isn’t scientifically validated. Doshas and pulse-based diagnosis haven’t held up as reliable ways to identify disease, and they shouldn’t replace a medical diagnosis.
  2. Individual herbs can still be studied. A plant used for centuries can contain compounds with measurable effects, and some Ayurvedic herbs have produced encouraging results in controlled human trials.

This guide takes the second path: it looks at the herbs one by one, asks what modern research shows, and flags where tradition is running ahead of the evidence.

The Better-Studied Herbs

Turmeric / Curcumin

Curcumin, the main active compound in turmeric, is the most researched Ayurvedic ingredient by a wide margin. The most consistent human findings involve joint discomfort and stiffness, where trials suggest modest improvements, in some cases comparable to common over-the-counter pain relievers, though the studies vary in quality.

The catch is absorption. Curcumin on its own is poorly absorbed, which is why products pair it with piperine (black pepper extract) or use specialized formulations.

  • Typical dose: 500 to 1,000 mg/day of a curcumin extract, with food.
  • Safety: Generally well tolerated, but there are reports of liver injury, particularly with high-absorption formulations. It may increase bleeding risk with blood thinners, can lower blood sugar, and is best avoided with gallbladder problems. Piperine can change how some medications are metabolized.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is the strongest Ayurvedic entry in the adaptogen category. Several randomized trials suggest it can reduce perceived stress and improve sleep quality, and some found lower cortisol. The trials are mostly short and small, and many used a single branded extract. We cover the details in our ashwagandha research brief.

  • Typical dose: 300 to 600 mg/day of a standardized root extract.
  • Safety: Rare cases of liver injury have been reported. It may affect thyroid hormone levels and can add to the effects of sedatives. Avoid during pregnancy, and use caution with autoimmune conditions or immunosuppressant drugs.

Boswellia

Boswellia (Indian frankincense) resin contains boswellic acids, including one called AKBA. Trials of standardized extracts suggest modest improvements in joint comfort and function. The evidence is promising but comes largely from studies of specific branded extracts.

  • Typical dose: 100 to 250 mg/day of an extract standardized for AKBA, or as directed for the specific extract.
  • Safety: Usually well tolerated; stomach upset and reflux are the most common complaints. Data in pregnancy is lacking.

Bacopa

Bacopa monnieri is traditionally used for memory, and it’s one of the few herbs with a reasonably consistent signal in controlled trials for memory acquisition and recall in healthy adults. The effects are modest and take time: trials generally ran 8 to 12 weeks before differences appeared. See our bacopa research brief.

  • Typical dose: About 300 mg/day of an extract standardized to bacosides, taken with food.
  • Safety: Nausea, cramping, and loose stools are common, and taking it with food helps. It may slow heart rate and could interact with thyroid or cholinergic medications.

Promising but Preliminary

Holy basil (tulsi). Small human studies suggest possible benefits for stress and blood sugar, but the trials are small and varied in design. Often taken as tea or 300 to 600 mg/day of extract. It may lower blood sugar, and animal studies raising questions about fertility mean it’s best avoided when pregnant or trying to conceive.

Andrographis. Used in Ayurveda as kalmegh. Several trials suggest it may modestly ease cold symptoms, making it one of the better-supported herbs for that use. It can cause stomach upset, may interact with blood-pressure and blood-thinning medications, and isn’t recommended during pregnancy.

Gymnema. Called gurmar (“sugar destroyer”) because it temporarily blunts the taste of sweetness. Small studies suggest effects on blood sugar, but the data is limited. Anyone on diabetes medication should involve their prescriber, since stacking it with medication could push blood sugar too low.

Gotu kola. Traditionally used for cognition and skin. Human evidence is limited and preliminary. Rare cases of liver injury have been reported.

Thin Evidence

Triphala. A traditional three-fruit formula with very little controlled human research. Its use rests mostly on tradition and lab studies.

Shilajit. A mineral-rich resin with a long traditional history, but only a few small human trials. Raw or poorly processed shilajit can contain heavy metals and fungal toxins, so only purified, tested products are worth considering.

The Quality Problem

This is the most important section of the guide.

Heavy metal contamination. Testing of Ayurvedic products bought in stores and online has found that a meaningful share contained detectable lead, mercury, or arsenic, sometimes at levels well above safety limits. Cases of lead poisoning have been linked to Ayurvedic preparations.

Part of the reason is intentional. A branch of traditional Ayurveda, sometimes called rasa shastra, deliberately incorporates metals and minerals into preparations known as bhasmas, which practitioners believe are made safe through processing. Modern toxicology doesn’t support that belief. Contamination can also come from soil, processing equipment, or poor manufacturing.

How to reduce the risk:

  • Avoid multi-ingredient traditional formulas with unclear ingredient lists, especially anything labeled as a bhasma or containing metals or minerals.
  • Choose single-herb, standardized extracts from manufacturers that publish heavy-metal testing. Our guide to standardized extracts explains what to look for on the label.

  • Be cautious with products shipped directly from overseas sellers, where quality oversight can be weaker.

“Traditional” and “natural” don’t guarantee safety, as we cover in natural doesn’t mean safe.

Interactions and Who Should Be Careful

  • Blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs: turmeric/curcumin, andrographis
  • Diabetes medications: gymnema, holy basil, curcumin (risk of low blood sugar)
  • Thyroid medication: ashwagandha, bacopa
  • Sedatives and sleep medications: ashwagandha
  • Immunosuppressants: ashwagandha and other herbs thought to stimulate immune activity
  • Liver conditions: turmeric, ashwagandha, and gotu kola have all been linked to rare liver injury, so stop and seek care if you notice dark urine, yellowing skin or eyes, or unusual fatigue
  • Pregnancy, nursing, or trying to conceive: most of these herbs lack safety data; avoid unless a clinician approves
  • Before surgery: stop herbs that affect bleeding or blood sugar, following your surgical team’s instructions

Bottom Line

Ayurveda gave the supplement world some of its most-studied herbs, and a few of them hold up reasonably well: curcumin for joint comfort, ashwagandha for perceived stress and sleep, boswellia for joints, and bacopa for memory over weeks to months. The effects are modest, and most of the rest of the category is preliminary. The traditional diagnostic framework isn’t a substitute for medical care. The biggest practical risk is quality, not the herbs themselves. Stick to single-herb, standardized, heavy-metal-tested products, skip traditional mineral formulas, and check for interactions before you start.
