Late summer has quietly become smoke season across much of North America. When the air quality index climbs and the sky turns that unmistakable orange-gray, two things reliably happen: people start coughing, and supplement marketers start selling “lung detox” formulas.
So let’s ask the honest question: is there anything in a capsule that meaningfully helps when the air outside is full of wildfire smoke?
The short answer: not much — and nothing that comes close to simply breathing less smoke. But a few nutrients have genuinely interesting (if early) research in air-pollution contexts, and it’s worth separating those from the pure marketing plays.
First, the things that actually work
Before we talk supplements at all, the interventions with real evidence behind them are boring and mechanical:
- A well-fitted N95 or KN95 mask filters the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) that makes smoke harmful. Cloth and surgical masks do very little against particles this small.
- HEPA air filtration indoors — a purifier sized for your room, or a DIY box-fan filter — measurably reduces indoor particle counts.
- Keeping windows closed and limiting outdoor exertion on bad-air days. Exercise multiplies the volume of air (and particles) moving through your lungs, so a hard outdoor run on a smoky day is roughly the worst-case combination.
No supplement on this page rivals any of those. If your budget for smoke season is $50, spend it on filtration, not capsules.
Why supplements get pitched for smoke at all
Wildfire smoke’s fine particles trigger oxidative stress and inflammation — that’s the general mechanism behind why bad air days feel bad and why long-term exposure is a health concern. Because oxidative stress is involved, the theory goes, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutrients might blunt some of the response.
It’s not a crazy theory. Researchers have run small controlled trials giving people antioxidants or omega-3s and then measuring their responses to polluted air. Some results are encouraging. But “blunted a biomarker in a small trial” is a long way from “protects your lungs,” and it’s important to hold that line.
The candidates, honestly ranked
Omega-3s: the most interesting evidence, still modest
Fish oil is probably the best-supported candidate here. A handful of small controlled trials — some in older adults, some in occupational settings with high particulate exposure — found that people taking omega-3s showed smaller inflammatory and cardiovascular biomarker responses to air pollution than those taking placebo.
That’s genuinely interesting. It’s also a small body of research with soft endpoints. Nobody has shown that fish oil prevents any smoke-related illness, and you shouldn’t expect to feel anything from it on a smoky day.
If you already take omega-3s, smoke season is a fine reason to stay consistent. Typical doses in this research were around 1–2 g combined EPA/DHA per day, taken with a meal containing fat. Doses above 3 g/day can increase bleeding tendency — relevant if you take blood thinners — so don’t escalate beyond standard doses chasing a protective effect that hasn’t been proven at any dose.
NAC: plausible mechanism, thin supplement evidence
N-acetylcysteine is the go-to “lung supplement” in most smoke-season roundups, largely because a prescription form of the same molecule has a long history in respiratory medicine as a mucolytic (mucus-thinner). NAC also raises glutathione, the body’s main internal antioxidant.
Here’s the honest gap: that clinical history involves medically supervised use in patient populations — it doesn’t tell us much about a healthy person taking capsules during a smoky week. Direct evidence that over-the-counter NAC helps with wildfire smoke exposure is essentially absent.
If you want to try it anyway, the common supplement range is 600–1,200 mg per day, and it’s generally well tolerated aside from occasional nausea and its famously sulfurous smell. People taking nitroglycerin should avoid it (the combination can drop blood pressure), and as always, anyone on medication should check with their pharmacist first.
Vitamin C and E: cheap, reasonable, unproven for this
Smoke exposure depletes antioxidants in the airway lining, and vitamin C in particular gets consumed quickly under oxidative stress. A few small studies in high-pollution settings have paired vitamins C and E and reported modest improvements in airway biomarkers.
A standard dose — 200–500 mg/day of vitamin C — is inexpensive and low-risk (stay under the 2,000 mg upper limit; very high doses mainly buy you digestive upset). Sulforaphane: the intriguing research thread
One of the more genuinely novel lines of research involves broccoli sprout compounds. Controlled studies in a heavily polluted region found that a broccoli-sprout beverage increased participants’ urinary excretion of certain airborne pollutant metabolites — in plain terms, it seemed to help the body process and clear specific inhaled compounds faster.
That’s a real, replicated-in-context finding, and it’s why sulforaphane keeps showing up in air-quality discussions. But the studies used a specific beverage preparation, measured excretion rather than health outcomes, and targeted particular volatile compounds — not the full particulate soup of wildfire smoke. What to skip entirely
- “Lung detox” and “smoke defense” blends. Proprietary mixes of mullein, herbs, and vitamins with zero direct evidence, sold hardest exactly when air quality is worst. The marketing outruns the science by miles.
- Mega-dosing anything. More antioxidant is not more protection; large trials of high-dose antioxidants in other contexts have repeatedly disappointed, and some (like high-dose beta-carotene in smokers) have backfired.
- Anything promising to “clean” your lungs. Lungs clear themselves remarkably well when you stop putting smoke into them. That’s the whole game.
A sensible smoke-season checklist
- Check the AQI before outdoor exercise; move workouts indoors above ~150, and be cautious above 100 if you have a respiratory condition.
- Run HEPA filtration in the rooms you spend the most time in.
- Wear an N95 if you must be outside in thick smoke.
- Stay hydrated — it keeps airways more comfortable, even if it does nothing about particles.
- If you supplement: consistent omega-3s at normal doses are the most evidence-adjacent choice; vitamin C and NAC are reasonable low-risk maybes; everything else is speculation.
Bottom line
Wildfire smoke is a physical exposure problem, and the effective responses are physical: filter the air, mask up, stay inside, don’t exercise in it. A few supplements — omega-3s most credibly, NAC and vitamin C more speculatively, sulforaphane most interestingly — have early research suggesting they might modestly blunt the body’s response to polluted air, but none has been shown to protect against smoke-related harm. Keep your expectations calibrated and your windows closed.
