There’s a particular flavor of tired that shows up in mid-August. Not the sharp exhaustion of a bad night’s sleep — more of a flat, heavy, “I walked to the mailbox and need to sit down” fatigue that lifts the moment you step into air conditioning. It’s real, it’s physiological, and every year it produces a wave of supplements promising to restore your “summer energy.”
Most of those products are selling you back things you can get for free. But not all of the advice is empty — there’s one genuinely evidence-backed intervention in this space, and a couple of things worth ruling out if the tiredness doesn’t lift when the heat does. Here’s the honest breakdown.
What Heat Is Actually Doing To You
Three mechanisms explain most of late-summer fatigue, and none of them are nutrient deficiencies.
Your circulation is doing double duty. To dump heat, your body dilates the blood vessels near the skin and shunts a meaningful fraction of cardiac output toward the surface. That blood isn’t available for muscle and brain at the same time. Your heart rate at any given workload rises, and the same walk or workout that felt easy in May feels notably harder in August. This is measurable, well-characterized, and entirely normal.
Your sleep is fragmenting. Core body temperature has to drop by about 1-2°F for sleep to initiate and consolidate. A hot bedroom blocks that drop, and the result is more time in light sleep, more awakenings you may not remember, and a morning that feels unearned. Sleep researchers put the ideal bedroom range around 60-67°F — a threshold a lot of August bedrooms simply don’t hit.
You’re running a fluid and sodium deficit. Sweat rates during hot-weather activity commonly run 0.5-2 liters per hour, and sweat isn’t just water. It carries sodium at roughly 500-1,500 mg per liter (highly individual — “salty sweaters” leave visible white crust on clothing and hats). Replace the volume with plain water and nothing else across several hours, and you dilute what’s left.
That’s the whole picture for most people. Notice what’s not on the list: a vitamin deficiency you can supplement away in a week.
The One Thing With Real Evidence: Sodium and Fluid
If you’re sweating heavily for more than about 60-90 minutes — outdoor labor, long runs, a hot afternoon on a bike — replacing sodium along with fluid is not marketing. It’s the basis of every sports-drink formulation and of the oral rehydration solutions used in clinical settings worldwide.
Practical targets that match mainstream sports-nutrition guidance:
- Under 60 minutes of activity, or a normal hot day around the house: water plus your usual meals. Food has plenty of sodium. You do not need a powder.
- 60-90+ minutes of heavy sweating: roughly 300-700 mg of sodium per liter of fluid consumed during the session, more toward the high end if you’re a visibly salty sweater or a heat-unacclimatized newcomer.
- All-day heat exposure with repeated sessions: carry it across the day rather than dumping it all at once, and let salted food do part of the work.
The failure mode people underrate is the opposite of dehydration. Drinking large volumes of plain water over hours of heavy sweating can lower blood sodium — a condition called exercise-associated hyponatremia. It’s uncommon but genuinely dangerous, and it’s most often seen in slower endurance participants who drink aggressively on a hot day. Confusing symptoms — headache, nausea, and yes, fatigue — with dehydration and drinking more water makes it worse. If you’re going long and hot, sodium belongs in the plan.

What Doesn’t Deserve Your Money
“Heat tolerance” and “summer energy” blends. Heat acclimatization is a real and impressive adaptation — plasma volume expands, you start sweating earlier and with lower sodium concentration, and heart rate at a given workload comes back down. It takes 7-14 days of gradual, repeated heat exposure. No supplement has been shown to produce or meaningfully accelerate it. The blends sold for this are typically B vitamins plus caffeine plus an adaptogen, and the honest description is “a stimulant with decoration.”
Extra B vitamins for heat fatigue specifically. B vitamins are required for energy metabolism, which is not the same as providing energy. If your intake is adequate, more doesn’t produce more. Heavy salt tablets taken without fluid. Concentrated sodium hitting an empty stomach is a reliable way to produce GI distress, and it doesn’t solve a fluid deficit. Sodium works dissolved in what you’re drinking.
Anything promising to “cool the body from within.” Not a mechanism. Cool your environment, your skin, and your drinks.
What’s Worth Ruling Out
Here’s the useful diagnostic question: does your fatigue lift in air conditioning? If a couple of hours indoors reliably restores you, you’re looking at heat physiology, and the fix is environmental. If the tiredness persists across cool days, cool rooms, and decent sleep, heat isn’t the explanation and you should stop treating it as one.
Two common, fixable causes are worth testing before you spend another season guessing:
Iron. Low ferritin causes exactly this kind of flat, effort-intolerant fatigue, and it’s common in menstruating women, endurance athletes, frequent blood donors, and people eating little heme iron. It’s also the single most common thing people self-treat wrongly — iron supplementation without a test is a bad idea, because excess iron accumulates and causes harm. Get ferritin measured.
B12. Particularly if you eat little or no animal food, or take metformin or long-term acid-reducing medication.

Sleep: The Highest-Leverage Fix
If you improve one thing this month, make it bedroom temperature. Cooling the room, a fan for evaporative help, lighter bedding, a cool shower an hour before bed (which paradoxically helps core temperature fall afterward) — these outperform every sleep supplement in a hot-weather context, and it isn’t close.
Once the room is handled, magnesium is a reasonable evening addition: 200-400 mg of a well-absorbed form like glycinate, taken an hour or two before bed. The evidence for magnesium and sleep is modest and strongest in people with low intake, not a knockout finding — we covered the state of it in magnesium and sleep. Magnesium citrate and oxide are more likely to loosen stools; glycinate is gentler. Doses well above 350 mg from supplements commonly cause GI effects, and people with reduced kidney function should not supplement magnesium without medical guidance.
Melatonin is a weaker fit here. It’s a circadian signal, not a sedative, and a hot room is a thermal problem, not a timing problem.
A Sane Late-Summer Approach
- Cool the bedroom first. Everything downstream gets easier.
- Match sodium to sweat, not to marketing. Water and food for short exposures; 300-700 mg sodium per liter for long, heavy sweating.
- Acclimatize gradually. A week or two of progressive heat exposure buys you more than any capsule.
- Shift hard effort to early morning or evening. Heat physiology doesn’t negotiate.
- Test, don’t guess, if the fatigue outlasts the heat. Ferritin and B12 first.
Bottom Line
Late-summer fatigue is largely your cardiovascular system paying a heat tax and your sleep quietly degrading in a warm room — both of which respond to environmental fixes, not supplements. The one supplement-adjacent intervention with solid support is replacing sodium alongside fluid during prolonged heavy sweating, in the range of 300-700 mg per liter. If your tiredness doesn’t track with heat exposure, get ferritin and B12 checked rather than adding another powder.
