September has a gravitational pull toward gyms. Vacations are over, the kids are back in school, the evenings are cooling off, and a few million people who trained sporadically (or not at all) between June and August walk back through the door with good intentions and, frequently, a shopping cart full of supplements they don’t need yet.
Here’s the honest version of what’s worth taking during a comeback, what can wait, and what was never worth it in the first place.
First, the good news about detraining
If you took two or three months mostly off, you lost less than you fear. Strength declines slower than it was built, and a phenomenon researchers call muscle memory — retained motor patterns plus lasting cellular adaptations in muscle fibers — means regaining lost muscle happens considerably faster than gaining it the first time. Most consistent lifters returning from a summer layoff are back near their previous working weights within four to eight weeks.
That matters for supplements, because it means the comeback period is short and self-correcting. The job of any supplement here is modest: support the training you’re actually doing, and take a little edge off the first weeks of soreness. No product accelerates muscle memory.
The shortlist
Creatine: restart it now, skip the loading phase
If you stopped taking creatine over the summer, restart it on day one — it’s the most consistently supported performance supplement in existence, with meaningful evidence for strength, training volume, and lean mass over time.
Two practical notes for the returning lifter:
- You don’t need to load. A loading phase (20 g/day for a week) saturates muscle stores faster, but a plain 3-5 g/day gets you to the same place in about three to four weeks — which conveniently matches the timeline where your training volume actually justifies saturated stores. - Expect the scale to move a little. One to two kilograms of water weight in the first weeks is normal and intramuscular — it’s not fat, and it’s not “fake” muscle either; hydrated muscle cells are the environment creatine works in.
Plain creatine monohydrate remains the evidence-backed default. Fancier forms cost more without outperforming it. Creatine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, but if you have kidney disease or take medications affecting the kidneys, clear it with your doctor first.
Protein: a target, not a product

Whether any of that comes from a tub of whey protein is purely logistical. If you reliably hit your target from food, a shake adds nothing. That’s delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), it’s temporary, and the repeated-bout effect means it fades sharply after the first couple of weeks of consistent training.
Tart cherry has accumulated a modest but genuine evidence base for taking the edge off: controlled trials in runners and lifters suggest reduced soreness ratings and slightly faster strength recovery when it’s taken for several days around hard sessions. Typical study protocols used 8-12 oz of juice twice daily or around 480 mg of concentrated extract, started a few days before the demanding work. The effect is real but small — think “somewhat less miserable stairs,” not “no soreness.”

What can wait a month
Pre-workouts and high-dose caffeine. Caffeine genuinely improves performance — roughly 3-6 mg/kg taken 30-60 minutes before training is the well-studied range. But a returning lifter limited by detraining and soreness isn’t limited by arousal, and starting your comeback on 300+ mg pre-workout doses mostly builds tolerance you’ll wish you had later. What was never worth it
The comeback moment makes people vulnerable to the “get back faster” pitch. Resist it:

A note on the other comeback variables
Supplements are the fourth-most-important item on this list, and it’s not close. Progressive but restrained programming (start around 60-70% of your old working weights), sleep (where the muscle actually gets built), and protein-adequate food will determine how your fall goes.
