Shilajit is having its influencer moment. A tar-like resin that seeps from rock formations in the Himalayas and other mountain ranges, it’s been used in Ayurvedic tradition for centuries and is now sold to Western buyers as a testosterone booster, energy enhancer, and all-purpose “primal” supplement. The marketing leans hard on the exotic origin story. The research record is far thinner — and there’s a safety issue with cheap versions that deserves more attention than the benefits do.
What Shilajit Is
Shilajit forms over long periods as plant material decomposes under pressure in mountain rock. The resulting resin is a complex mix of humic substances — mainly fulvic acid, which is what modern extracts are standardized to — plus dibenzo-alpha-pyrones and a broad spread of trace minerals. Traditional preparations were consumed as raw resin; reputable modern products are purified extracts in capsule or resin form, because raw shilajit straight from the rock can carry contaminants, fungus, and — most importantly — heavy metals.
That last point isn’t a footnote. Independent testing of shilajit products, particularly raw resins and inexpensive imports, has repeatedly found concerning levels of lead and other heavy metals. Some traditional preparations sold in South Asian markets have tested high enough to cause documented lead poisoning cases. If you take one thing from this brief, make it this: shilajit is a product category where third-party testing is the difference between a supplement and a slow-drip contamination problem.
The Testosterone Claim, Honestly Read
The claim that drives most shilajit sales traces largely to one small randomized controlled trial in healthy men aged roughly 45-55. After 90 days of purified shilajit at 250 mg twice daily, the supplement group showed significantly higher total and free testosterone than placebo — increases in the neighborhood of 20 percent for total testosterone.
That’s a real study with a real result, and it’s fair for marketers to cite it. Here’s what the marketing leaves out:
- It’s one small trial. Dozens of supplements have a single positive testosterone study that was never replicated. Replication is where most of them go to die.
- A hormone number is not an outcome. The study measured blood values, not strength, body composition, libido, or how the men felt. A modest bump within the normal range may not translate to anything you’d notice.
- Middle-aged participants. Whether the result generalizes to 25-year-olds with normal testosterone is unknown, and mechanistically less likely.
A couple of small studies in men with fertility concerns have also reported improvements in sperm count and motility with shilajit. Again: small, few, preliminary. Energy, Fatigue, and Everything Else
Shilajit’s traditional reputation is as a rejuvenator, and modern sellers translate that into “energy and mitochondrial support.” The mechanistic story — fulvic acid and dibenzo-alpha-pyrones may support CoQ10 stability and mitochondrial function — comes mostly from lab and animal work. Human data on fatigue is sparse: a small trial reported that shilajit supplementation helped preserve muscular strength during fatiguing exercise, and there’s early work on chronic fatigue models in rats that gets quoted far beyond its weight.
There is also a small trial in postmenopausal women with low bone density reporting that shilajit supplementation supported bone mineral density measures over several months. Like everything else here, it’s a single study awaiting replication — worth watching, not worth acting on alone.
The pattern across all of it: plausible mechanisms, thin human evidence, small studies, little replication. That doesn’t make shilajit worthless. It makes it early.
Sensible Dosing
Human studies have mostly used 250-500 mg per day of purified extract standardized to fulvic acid (often 50-60 percent), taken once daily or split with meals. Resin users typically dose a rice-grain to pea-sized portion dissolved in warm water — which illustrates the dosing problem with resins: you’re eyeballing it.
Practical notes:
- Take it with food; some users report mild stomach upset on an empty stomach.
- Effects, if any, are gradual — the studies ran 8-12 weeks. This is not a pre-workout.
- More is not better, and given the contamination issue, megadosing a mineral-dense resin is a bad trade.
Safety: The Part That Actually Matters
For purified, tested extracts at studied doses, reported side effects in trials were minimal. The real risks live elsewhere:
- Heavy metals. Covered above, but worth repeating: buy only purified extracts from brands that publish third-party heavy-metal testing (look for current certificates, not just a seal on the label). Avoid raw resin of unknown origin, however “authentic” the listing sounds.
- Iron overload. Shilajit is mineral-rich and may raise iron parameters; anyone with hemochromatosis or elevated ferritin should avoid it.
- Gout and uric acid. Some traditional sources and preliminary data suggest shilajit may raise uric acid in susceptible people; if you have gout, skip it or clear it with your clinician.
- Pregnancy and nursing: no safety data — avoid.
- Hormone-sensitive conditions and medications. Given the possible hormonal activity, anyone on hormone therapy or managing a hormone-sensitive condition should involve their care team.
- Blood sugar medication. Limited data suggests possible additive effects on blood sugar; monitor and inform your prescriber.
Bottom Line
Shilajit is a genuinely interesting traditional substance with early, small-trial evidence for testosterone support in middle-aged men and not much else that’s solid yet. If you want to try it, use a purified extract with published heavy-metal testing at 250-500 mg/day for 8-12 weeks, track something concrete, and be prepared for nothing to happen. If you can’t verify the testing, don’t buy it — with shilajit, the sourcing question is bigger than the science question.
