Maca has one of the better origin stories in the supplement aisle: a hardy cruciferous root — a relative of radishes and turnips — cultivated for thousands of years at brutal altitudes in the Peruvian Andes, eaten as a staple food, and credited locally with fertility and stamina. The story is true, and the food-staple part matters for safety. But “eaten as food for centuries” and “does what the label says” are different claims, and for maca the gap between them is instructive.
Here’s what the human research supports, what it quietly contradicts, and how to use maca sensibly if you decide to.
What maca actually is
Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is grown almost exclusively in the Peruvian highlands above 4,000 meters. The root is traditionally dried and boiled — an important detail, because raw maca is hard to digest and contains compounds the cooking process reduces. Supplements come in three broad forms:
- Raw powder: dried, ground root. Cheapest, hardest on digestion.
- Gelatinized powder: cooked and pressurized to remove starch. Easier to digest; this is closer to how maca is traditionally consumed.
- Extracts: concentrated, sometimes standardized to macamides or glucosinolates, though standardization practices vary widely.
You’ll also see color varieties — yellow (most common), red, and black — marketed with distinct benefits (black for men, red for women, and so on). There are intriguing animal findings suggesting the phenotypes differ, but the human evidence base is too thin to support choosing a color for a specific outcome. The one claim with real support: libido
Maca’s best evidence is for sexual desire. Several small randomized controlled trials — in healthy men, in women with low libido, and in people experiencing sexual side effects from antidepressants — have found modest improvements in self-reported desire compared with placebo, typically using 1.5-3 g/day for 6 to 12 weeks.
The findings come with the usual caveats for this corner of the literature: the trials are small (often a few dozen participants), self-reported desire is a noisy endpoint with a hefty placebo response, and not every study is positive. Systematic reviews tend to conclude the same thing — the signal looks real but the evidence is limited. The claim the research contradicts: “hormone balancing”
Here’s the part maca marketing gets exactly backwards. Maca is routinely sold as a “hormone balancer” — the implication being that it raises testosterone in men or modulates estrogen in women.
The trials say otherwise, and unusually clearly: studies that measured hormone panels alongside libido outcomes have repeatedly found no significant changes in testosterone, estrogen, LH, or FSH, even when desire improved. Whatever maca is doing, it does not appear to work through sex hormones. That’s actually a point in its favor from a safety standpoint — a supplement that genuinely moved hormone levels would deserve far more caution — but it means the “balances your hormones” framing isn’t hedged optimism, it’s contradicted by the available data.

Menopause, fertility, energy: preliminary at best
Menopause symptoms. A few small trials report reduced menopausal symptom scores — hot flashes, mood, sleep — versus placebo. The studies are short, small, heterogeneous in preparation and dose, and reviews consistently flag the evidence as insufficient. Given that maca doesn’t appear to act through estrogen, a symptom benefit is plausible without being hormonal, but “plausible” is where it currently sits.
Male fertility. Small studies suggest possible improvements in sperm count and motility, but the trials are few, brief, and not uniformly positive. No one should be making family-planning decisions around a root powder.
Energy and mood. This is mostly extrapolated from tradition and from athlete pilot studies too small to interpret. If you feel more energetic on maca, the most likely explanations are expectation and the fact that you’re eating a nutrient-dense food powder. There’s no good trial evidence for maca as a meaningful energy intervention.
Dosing and timing
- Dose: 1.5-3 g/day of root powder (or the extract equivalent), the range used in most positive trials. More has not been shown to work better.
- Form: Gelatinized powder is the sensible default — closer to traditional preparation, gentler on digestion, and lower in the raw root’s goitrogenic compounds.
- With food: Yes. Maca is a food; take it like one. It has a malty, slightly earthy taste that mixes tolerably into oatmeal or smoothies.
- Timing: No evidence favors morning or evening. Consistency matters more than clock time.
- Timeline: The libido trials ran 6-12 weeks. Two weeks is not a fair test.
Safety and cautions
Maca’s long history as a food staple is genuinely reassuring for general tolerability, and trials report few side effects beyond occasional digestive upset or insomnia at higher doses. The cautions worth knowing:
- Thyroid. As a crucifer, raw maca contains goitrogenic glucosinolates. The practical relevance at supplement doses is uncertain, but if you have thyroid disease — especially with low iodine intake — prefer gelatinized maca and mention it to your clinician.
- Hormone-sensitive conditions. Despite trials showing no hormone changes, most references still advise caution with hormone-sensitive conditions until better long-term data exist. That’s reasonable conservatism.
- Pregnancy and nursing. Avoid supplemental doses. Safety hasn’t been studied, and traditional food use in Peru doesn’t map onto concentrated daily powders elsewhere.
- Medications. No well-documented drug interactions are established, but formal interaction studies are lacking — the absence of evidence, not evidence of absence.
There is no established upper limit; doses far above 3 g/day have simply never been shown to add benefit.
What to look for on the label
Prefer single-ingredient maca that states the form (gelatinized vs. raw) and the country of origin — genuine maca is Peruvian, and cheaper substitutes grown elsewhere at low altitude have raised quality questions in the botanical trade. Maca earns a narrow, honest recommendation: 1.5-3 g/day of gelatinized root for 6-12 weeks is a reasonable, low-risk trial for flagging libido, with modest expectations. It does not balance hormones — the trials that looked found no hormonal changes at all — and its menopause, fertility, and energy claims remain preliminary.
