Lycopene and Sun Protection: What the Research Actually Shows

Tomatoes offer real — but tiny — internal sun protection. Here's the honest math.

Every July, some version of the same claim makes the rounds: “eat tomatoes and you won’t burn.” The idea of edible sun protection is irresistible — no greasy sunscreen, no reapplying, just a Mediterranean diet and a tan. And unlike a lot of summer supplement folklore, this one traces back to genuine controlled research on lycopene, the carotenoid that makes tomatoes red.

So it’s worth doing the honest math. Lycopene does measurably reduce how much your skin reddens under UV light. It’s also one of the clearest examples on this site of a real effect that gets inflated far beyond what the numbers support. What Lycopene Is

Lycopene is a carotenoid — the same family of plant pigments as beta-carotene and the astaxanthin we’ve covered before. A few things the evidence does not support:
