Drip bars have arrived in seemingly every city: lounge chairs, soft lighting, and a menu of IV “cocktails” promising energy, immunity, glowing skin, athletic recovery, and — the perennial bestseller — hangover rescue. Sessions typically run $100 to $400, and the pitch is always the same: IV delivery bypasses digestion, so you get 100% absorption.
That claim is technically true and almost entirely beside the point. Let’s walk through why.
The 100% absorption argument falls apart on contact
Yes, nutrients infused into a vein skip the gut and reach your bloodstream fully. But absorption was never the bottleneck for a healthy person. The bottleneck is what your body does after absorption — and for most of what’s in a drip bag, the answer is: excrete the excess.
Take vitamin C, the anchor of most IV menus. Your body tightly regulates blood levels. Research on vitamin C pharmacokinetics has shown that plasma concentrations essentially saturate at oral doses around 200 mg; beyond that, the kidneys filter the surplus into urine within hours. An IV dose spikes blood levels higher for a short window, and then the same kidneys clear it just the same. There’s no storage tank being filled. B vitamins follow the same script. They’re water-soluble: what your cells can’t use promptly, you excrete. Feeling a “boost” minutes after a B12 drip is pharmacologically implausible unless you were genuinely deficient — and if you were, oral B12 corrects deficiency reliably in the large majority of cases, a fact well established in clinical research. What about hydration?
Drip bars lean hard on hydration because it’s the one thing an IV genuinely does fast. A liter of IV saline will absolutely rehydrate you.
So will drinking fluids. Oral rehydration — water plus electrolytes and a little glucose — is the globally established standard for treating mild to moderate dehydration precisely because it works so well. Your gut absorbs fluid efficiently; that’s its job. Unless you’re vomiting uncontrollably or otherwise can’t keep liquids down (a situation that calls for medical care, not a lounge chair), drinking achieves the same result over an hour or two for roughly $1 of electrolyte powder. The hangover package is the same story with better marketing. A hangover is not primarily a hydration problem — it involves acetaldehyde metabolism, inflammation, sleep disruption, and gastric irritation. Fluids help the dehydration component; nothing in a drip bag addresses the rest. Controlled evidence that IV therapy shortens or softens hangovers doesn’t exist.
The risks nobody mentions between sips of cucumber water
An IV is a medical procedure. The risks are small in absolute terms but entirely unnecessary for a wellness ritual:
- Infection. Any needle through skin into a vein creates an entry point for bacteria. Sterile technique at retail drip bars varies.
- Phlebitis — vein inflammation and irritation at the infusion site.
- Compounding and dosing errors. Wellness IV cocktails are mixed products, and oversight of retail IV lounges is thin. US regulators have issued warnings to IV therapy companies over the years for both unsupported health claims and manufacturing concerns.
- Fluid and electrolyte load. For people with kidney or heart conditions, a rapid liter of fluid is not a neutral event.
- Megadose-specific issues. Very high-dose IV vitamin C can trigger serious problems in people with G6PD deficiency (a common enzyme variant many people don’t know they have) and raises oxalate levels, relevant for kidney-stone formers.
None of these risks exist with a capsule and a glass of water.
When IV nutrients are legitimate
None of this means IV nutrition is fake medicine. It’s real medicine — for specific situations:
- Diagnosed malabsorption (short bowel syndrome, certain post-surgical states, severe Crohn’s flares)
- Severe deficiency states where oral repletion is too slow or impossible
- Patients who cannot take anything by mouth
- Severe dehydration under medical care
The common thread: a diagnosed problem, a clinician, and monitoring. That’s the difference between an infusion and a $250 wellness accessory.
What to do instead
If the drip-bar menu appeals to you, here’s the oral version of essentially everything on it:
- Hydration: water plus an electrolyte packet or sports drink — effective within an hour or two
- Vitamin C: 200 mg daily saturates plasma; food sources get most people there. See our vitamin C page for dosing details
- B vitamins: a standard B-complex covers far more than your daily needs; test before megadosing B12
- “Immunity”: no drip or pill “boosts” a healthy immune system — adequate sleep, and correcting genuine deficiencies (vitamin D, zinc) is the evidence-supported territory
- Recovery and energy: the boring fundamentals — sleep, food, training load — outperform any infusion

Bottom line
IV vitamin drips solve an absorption problem healthy people don’t have, at 100x the price of oral supplements, with small but real procedural risks and no controlled evidence of benefit for energy, immunity, skin, or hangovers. Save the vein for when a doctor says you need it. If you can swallow, you can absorb.
