Every July the same two camps show up in supplement forums. One insists that summer heat turns your vitamins into inert powder and everything belongs in the fridge. The other shrugs and leaves a bottle of fish oil on a sunny windowsill for three months.
Both are wrong, in opposite directions. Heat, humidity, light, and oxygen do degrade supplements — but selectively, gradually, and with a clear hierarchy of what’s vulnerable. Knowing that hierarchy saves you from both wasted money and needless fridge Tetris.
What “Degradation” Actually Means Here
When a supplement degrades, the active compound chemically breaks down into something inactive. Nothing dramatic happens — no smell, no color change in most cases, no illness if you take it. You just get less than the label says. That’s the honest framing: heat-damaged supplements are usually weaker, not dangerous.
Three environmental factors drive this, in rough order of how much trouble they cause in a typical home:
- Moisture. Water is the universal reaction accelerator. It lets otherwise-stable compounds hydrolyze and lets tablets absorb humidity, soften, and clump.
- Heat. Chemical reaction rates roughly double for every 10°C rise. This is why “room temperature” on a label — generally meaning 20-25°C / 68-77°F — matters.
- Light and oxygen. These mainly attack fats and a handful of light-sensitive vitamins.
Note the ordering. The most common storage mistake in most households isn’t summer heat at all — it’s keeping supplements in a steamy bathroom year-round.
The Genuinely Vulnerable: Probiotics
If you own one supplement that summer heat can meaningfully ruin, it’s this one. Probiotics contain live microorganisms, and heat kills them. Not “reduces potency by 8%” — kills them.
Manufacturers deal with this in two ways. Refrigerated products state it plainly on the label. Shelf-stable products use freeze-dried strains and moisture-blocking packaging, but their guaranteed CFU count at expiry generally assumes storage at or below about 25°C (77°F). Push well past that and the guarantee quietly stops meaning anything.
The realistic summer failure points:
- A car. Interior temperatures can exceed 50°C (120°F) within an hour on a hot day. An afternoon of shopping with a probiotic bottle in the back seat can cost you a meaningful share of the live count.
- Mail delivery in a heatwave. A package sitting on a porch all afternoon in August gets the same treatment.
- A cupboard above the stove or beside a sunny window.
Practical rule: treat a probiotic like something perishable. If you buy one in summer, get it inside promptly. If a shipment arrives hot to the touch, contact the seller — reputable ones ship with cold packs in warm months for a reason. The Second Casualty: Fish Oil and Other Oils
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated, which is chemistry-speak for “easy to oxidize.” Heat, light, and oxygen all accelerate rancidity, and rancidity is the one degradation type you can actually detect at home.
Signs your omega-3 has turned:
- A strong fishy or paint-like smell when you open the bottle or pierce a capsule
- Capsules that have gone cloudy, discolored, or sticky/leaking
- Fishy burps that started recently with a bottle that used to be fine
Oxidized fish oil isn’t delivering what you bought, and rancid fats taste and smell unpleasant enough that most people stop taking it anyway. Discard and replace rather than pushing through. Store the bottle in a cupboard rather than on the counter, keep it closed, and if you live somewhere genuinely hot, refrigeration is reasonable for oils even when the label doesn’t demand it. The same logic applies to flaxseed oil, evening primrose oil, and liquid vitamin E.
Middling Vulnerability: Vitamin C, B Vitamins, Effervescents
These are moisture-sensitive more than heat-sensitive.
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) oxidizes in the presence of moisture and air. B vitamins — particularly thiamine (B1) and folate — degrade with humidity and heat over time. Effervescent tablets and powdered greens or electrolyte sticks are hygroscopic by design and will clump into bricks in a humid pantry.
None of these fall off a cliff in a single warm week. What they do is lose potency faster than the expiry date assumes, which is a slow, invisible tax. Two habits fix most of it:
- Leave the desiccant packet in the bottle. People throw these out reflexively. Don’t; that’s the moisture control.
- Close the cap fully and quickly. Standing there with the bottle open while you take three other things is a small but real exposure.
Mostly Robust: Minerals and Most Tablets
Here’s where the panic is unwarranted. Mineral salts — magnesium, zinc, calcium, iron — are chemically stable inorganic compounds. Heat doesn’t do much to them. The same is broadly true of most compressed tablets, which are formulated for shelf stability, and of fat-soluble vitamins like D and K in dry form.
A multivitamin sitting in a kitchen cupboard through a warm summer is not being destroyed. It may be losing a few percent of its most fragile constituents over months. That’s normal, expected, and already partly accounted for in overage that manufacturers build in.
The Storage Rules That Actually Matter
- Cool, dry, dark, and closed. A bedroom closet shelf or an interior kitchen cupboard away from the stove beats almost anything else in the house.
- Not the bathroom. Shower steam makes it the highest-humidity room you own. This is the single most common storage mistake and it applies in every season.
- Not the car, not the windowsill, not on top of the fridge (the coils vent warm air upward).
- Refrigerate only what the label says, plus fish oil if your home runs hot. Over-refrigerating creates its own problem: taking a cold bottle in and out of a humid summer kitchen causes condensation inside it, which is exactly the moisture you were trying to avoid. Does an Expiry Date Still Mean Anything?
It means “guaranteed potency until this date under labeled storage conditions.” It is not a safety cliff — most supplements past date are simply weaker, not harmful. But storage abuse effectively pulls that date forward without changing the printed number, which is why a bottle that spent July in a car can be underdelivering well before the date on the label. The exception worth flagging: iron. Not because it degrades badly, but because iron-containing products are a leading cause of accidental poisoning in young children. Storage location matters for safety reasons there, independent of heat — keep it high, closed, and out of reach.

Summer heat doesn’t ruin your supplement cabinet wholesale.
