Late July is peak sunburn season, and it’s also the season when the same question turns up over and over: could my supplements be making me burn faster? It’s a reasonable question, because the answer for prescription drugs is a loud yes — several common medications reliably increase how much damage a given dose of UV does to your skin. Supplements are a murkier category, and the internet handles them badly, swinging between “everything natural is fine” and “this herb will fry you.”
The honest picture sits in between. A small number of supplements have a real, mechanistically sensible photosensitizing effect. A larger number have essentially no evidence either way. And a third group is marketed as protecting you from the sun, which is where the hype gets thickest.
What “photosensitivity” actually means
Two different things get lumped under the term, and separating them clears up most of the confusion.
Phototoxic reactions are the common kind. A compound absorbs UV energy, becomes reactive, and damages nearby skin cells. The result looks and feels like an exaggerated sunburn — redness, stinging, sometimes blistering — confined to sun-exposed skin. It’s dose-dependent: more compound plus more UV equals more reaction, and it can happen on first exposure. Anyone can get one if the dose is high enough.
Photoallergic reactions are rarer and immune-mediated. UV alters a compound into something the immune system treats as foreign, producing an itchy, eczema-like rash that can spread slightly beyond exposed areas. These require prior sensitization and affect only susceptible people.
Almost all the supplement-related cases described in the literature are phototoxic. That matters practically, because phototoxicity responds to dose reduction and timing in a way an allergy doesn’t.
The supplements with the strongest case
St. John’s wort is the standout. Its hypericin content is a known photosensitizer, well established in veterinary contexts where livestock grazing on Hypericum develop severe sun reactions. In humans at the doses typically used for mood support — often around 300 mg of standardized extract three times daily — increased sun sensitivity is a recognized, labeled caution rather than a theoretical one. Reported effects range from mild (burning faster than usual) to more significant skin and eye sensitivity at higher intakes. Fair-skinned people appear more susceptible.
This is worth flagging for a second reason: St. John’s wort is one of the most interaction-prone botanicals on the shelf, inducing liver enzymes that can reduce blood levels of oral contraceptives, some antidepressants, anticoagulants, transplant medications, and more. Furocoumarin-containing botanicals — bergamot, angelica root, dong quai, cow parsley, some cold-pressed citrus oils — contain psoralens, compounds so reliably phototoxic that a purified version was historically used with controlled UV in dermatology. The important nuance: the classic reactions (streaky burns, “margarita dermatitis” from lime juice on the hands) come from skin contact with the plant or its essential oil, then sun. Oral capsules of these herbs are a much weaker and less well-documented exposure route. If you use citrus or bergamot essential oils on skin, though, keep that skin out of the sun for 12-24 hours.
Very high-dose vitamin B6 deserves a mention. Photosensitivity has been described in the context of pyridoxine intakes well above the tolerable upper limit of 100 mg/day for adults. That’s a fringe scenario, but B6 megadoses are also the classic cause of peripheral nerve symptoms, so it’s another reason to keep single-nutrient B6 modest unless a clinician has directed otherwise.
What gets blamed but probably shouldn’t
Niacin flush. Immediate-release nicotinic acid at 500 mg and up produces a prostaglandin-mediated flush — hot, red, tingling skin across the face, neck, and chest starting within 15-30 minutes and fading within an hour. It looks alarmingly like a sunburn and often gets attributed to sun exposure. It isn’t photosensitivity; it’s vasodilation, and it happens indoors at midnight just as readily.
Vitamin D. No, it doesn’t make you burn faster. If anything the relationship runs the other way — your skin makes vitamin D from UVB, which is why the question of whether sunscreen blocks vitamin D keeps resurfacing.
Multivitamins, magnesium, omega-3s, creatine, most minerals. No credible photosensitizing signal. If you started burning faster after a routine change, look at medications first: doxycycline and other tetracyclines, some thiazide diuretics, certain NSAIDs, oral retinoids, amiodarone, and some sulfonamides are substantially more potent photosensitizers than anything in the vitamin aisle.
The other direction: “internal sunscreen” claims
This is where the marketing gets loose. Several supplements are sold as UV protection from the inside, usually citing changes in minimal erythemal dose — the UV exposure needed to produce visible redness.
The most-studied are the carotenoids. Trials of lycopene (roughly 10-16 mg/day, often as tomato extract or paste) and beta-carotene over 8-12 weeks have shown modest increases in the UV dose needed to redden skin. Astaxanthin at 4-6 mg/day and polypodium leucotomos fern extract have similar preliminary support. Some studies also find improvements in hydration and elasticity independent of UV.
Two caveats make the practical implications small. First, the effect sizes are modest — the honest framing is a small shift in threshold, not a meaningful SPF. Second, and more important, redness is not the endpoint that matters most. UV damage accumulates in ways that don’t announce themselves as sunburn, so an intervention that slightly delays redness could plausibly encourage longer exposure while doing little about the underlying damage. That’s a real risk of the framing, not a hypothetical one.

Practical handling
- If you take St. John’s wort, treat sun exposure with extra care: cover up, use adequate SPF, and be alert for burning faster than you expect. Talk to a pharmacist about your full medication list before continuing.
- If you use citrus or bergamot essential oils topically, keep that skin covered for 12-24 hours.
- Timing doesn’t fix phototoxicity. Taking a photosensitizer at night doesn’t clear it from your system by noon; half-lives are long enough that dose, not clock time, is the lever.
- New burning pattern? Audit medications first. Then supplements. Then everything else that changed.
- Don’t rely on any capsule as sun protection. The carotenoid data is real but small.
- Talk to a clinician if you have lupus, porphyria, or another photosensitive condition — the calculus is different and some botanicals are worth avoiding entirely.

Bottom line
Most supplements don’t affect sun sensitivity in either direction. St. John’s wort is the clear exception worth knowing about, furocoumarin-rich botanicals matter mainly as topicals, and very high-dose B6 is a fringe concern. On the protective side, carotenoids like lycopene and astaxanthin produce a modest, real shift in how much UV it takes to redden skin — meaningfully less than a shirt, a hat, or sunscreen. If your skin is behaving differently in the sun, medications are the far more likely culprit.
