Chamomile tea before bed is about as old as sleep advice gets — old enough that it’s easy to file under folklore and move on. But chamomile is unusual among traditional remedies: it has actually been put through controlled human trials, repeatedly, for both sleep and everyday anxiousness. The results won’t knock you out. They’re also not nothing.
Here’s what the evidence says, what dose the studies used, and who should skip it.
What chamomile is
The chamomile in your tea bag is almost always German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), a daisy-family plant whose dried flowers contain a cocktail of flavonoids and terpenoids. The compound that gets most of the scientific attention is apigenin, a flavonoid that binds to benzodiazepine sites on GABA-A receptors — the same receptor family targeted by prescription sedatives — but weakly and without the knockout punch.
That mechanism matters for setting expectations. Chamomile isn’t a sedative in any pharmacological sense. The plausible model is a mild “volume knob” effect on nervous system arousal: enough to ease the transition into sleep, not enough to sedate you. The sleep evidence
The chamomile sleep literature is a stack of small randomized trials plus a few pooled analyses. An honest summary:
- Sleep quality: Several trials — notably in older adults and postpartum women — found modest but measurable improvements in self-reported sleep quality after two to four weeks of chamomile extract, typically 200–400 mg daily. Pooled analyses of these trials generally support a small positive effect on sleep quality.
- Insomnia severity: Results are weaker here. A trial in adults with chronic sleep difficulties found little significant benefit on most objective measures, with only some daytime-functioning signals. Pooled analyses tend to find chamomile helps how sleep feels more than it changes hard metrics like time to fall asleep.
- Sleep onset: A few studies hint at falling asleep somewhat faster; the data are thin and inconsistent.
Pattern recognition across the herbal sleep category: like valerian and lemon balm, chamomile shows subjective benefit in small trials while objective effects stay modest. The fair conclusion is that chamomile can nudge sleep quality — clearest in people whose sleep is disturbed by life circumstances (new baby, aging, stress) rather than entrenched chronic insomnia.
The calm-down evidence is arguably better
Some of chamomile’s strongest trial results aren’t about sleep at all. Controlled studies running two to eight weeks in people with mild-to-moderate anxious symptoms found meaningful reductions versus placebo, with longer-term follow-up work suggesting the effect holds during continued use. Doses in these studies were higher — often 500–1,500 mg of extract daily, divided.
This matters for sleep indirectly: if what keeps you awake is an evening mind that won’t power down, a gentle daytime-safe calming agent may do more than a sedative-mimic would. That said, persistent or severe anxiety is a medical matter — a supplement is not a substitute for talking to a professional. How to use it
Tea:
- Use 1–2 tablespoons of dried flowers (or 1–2 quality tea bags) per cup
- Steep covered for 5–10 minutes — covered matters, since some active constituents ride off in the steam
- Drink 30–60 minutes before bed
- Note that most commercial tea bags deliver a fraction of trial-level doses; brew strong and steep long if you’re chasing the studied effect
Extract (capsules):
- For sleep: 200–400 mg of standardized extract (often standardized to ~1.2% apigenin), 30–60 minutes before bed
- For daytime calm: trials used 500–1,500 mg daily in divided doses
- Give it two to four weeks — trial benefits accrued over weeks, not the first night
With food or without: either is fine; no meaningful absorption data favors one.

Safety, interactions, and who should skip it
Chamomile is one of the better-tolerated herbs in the trial literature, with side effects at placebo levels in most studies. The exceptions are specific and worth taking seriously:
- Ragweed-family allergy: Chamomile is an Asteraceae plant, cousin to ragweed, daisies, and chrysanthemums. Cross-reactive allergic reactions — occasionally severe — are documented. If ragweed season wrecks you, be cautious; if you’ve ever reacted to chamomile products, avoid entirely.
- Warfarin and anticoagulants: Chamomile contains coumarin-related compounds, and case reports describe interactions with warfarin. If you’re on a blood thinner, ask your prescriber first.
- Sedating medications: Additive drowsiness with benzodiazepines, sleep medications, or alcohol is plausible; don’t combine casually.
- Pregnancy and nursing: Occasional weak tea is a traditional staple, but concentrated extracts lack safety data, and high intakes are discouraged in pregnancy. Run it past your provider.
- Surgery: Stop concentrated chamomile one to two weeks before scheduled procedures, per the usual guidance for herbs with anticoagulant potential.
Bottom line
Chamomile earns its bedtime reputation — barely, honestly, and modestly. Expect a gentler wind-down and somewhat better-feeling sleep after a couple of weeks at 200–400 mg of extract (or genuinely strong tea), not a knockout pill. Its calming evidence is arguably stronger than its sleep evidence, which suggests the best candidates are people kept awake by a racing evening mind. Cheap, well tolerated, and low-stakes to trial — as long as you clear the ragweed-allergy and blood-thinner caveats.
