Bovine colostrum went from niche athlete supplement to social-media staple in about two years, marketed for gut health, immunity, skin, and hair — often all in the same breath. Underneath the influencer gloss there is a real research literature, and parts of it are moderately interesting. But it’s narrower than the marketing, the effects are modest, and there’s a dosing discrepancy between the studies and the scoop in your jar that deserves to be the headline.
What Colostrum Is
Colostrum is the first milk a mammal produces after giving birth — a concentrated package designed to jump-start a newborn’s immune defenses and gut development. Compared with mature milk, it’s dense in immunoglobulins (mainly IgG), lactoferrin, growth factors like IGF-1, and various bioactive peptides. Supplements are made from bovine (cow) colostrum collected in the first day or two after calving, then pasteurized and spray-dried into powder or capsules. Quality varies enormously; better products state their IgG percentage, and the usual label-reading rules apply.
The core scientific question has always been: do those bioactive proteins survive human digestion in meaningful amounts, and do they do anything once they’re there? For some outcomes, small trials suggest a qualified yes. For most of the marketed claims, the honest answer is “nobody has properly checked.”
The Strongest Area: Exercise and Gut Barrier
The most consistent line of colostrum research involves the gut barrier under stress. Heavy exercise — especially endurance exercise in the heat — temporarily increases intestinal permeability, the phenomenon loosely called “leaky gut.” Several small controlled trials in athletes found that bovine colostrum, typically at 10-20 grams per day for a couple of weeks, reduced markers of exercise-induced permeability compared with placebo.
This is a genuinely decent result across multiple small studies, and the proposed mechanism — growth factors and peptides supporting the intestinal lining — is plausible. Two caveats keep it in perspective. First, these are marker studies: reduced permeability on a sugar-absorption test is not the same as feeling better, performing better, or having fewer GI issues on race day, though a few trials point in encouraging directions there too. The Immune Claims, Honestly Read
The immune story rests mostly on trials in hard-training athletes, a group prone to upper-respiratory complaints. Several small studies reported that colostrum users logged fewer self-reported upper-respiratory symptom days over a training block; others found no difference. The trials are small, symptom reporting is subjective, and the mechanism — whether ingested IgG meaningfully survives digestion in adults — remains debated.
The evidence-honest summary: there’s a mixed, modest signal for fewer sniffle days in heavily-training athletes, and essentially no good data showing colostrum changes anything for an average adult’s immune function. The Dose Gap Nobody Mentions
Here’s the number that should reframe how you look at colostrum products. Positive trials generally used 10-60 grams per day — often 20 g, sometimes more. Popular consumer products commonly provide 1-2 grams per serving and cost a premium doing it.
That’s a 10- to 30-fold gap between the studied doses and the marketed ones. It doesn’t prove low doses do nothing — nobody has rigorously tested them, which is exactly the problem — but it means the trial evidence on the sales page was generated under conditions the product doesn’t replicate. Matching research doses with a typical consumer product would cost several dollars a day and involve eating a lot of powder.
If you try colostrum anyway:
- Doses in the studied range are usually split across the day, mixed into cool liquid — heat degrades the proteins, so don’t put it in coffee.
- Timing isn’t critical; consistency across weeks is what the trials modeled.
- Give it a defined trial window (4-8 weeks) with one trackable outcome, then decide.
Safety and Who Should Be Cautious
Colostrum is a dairy product, and most healthy adults tolerate it well in trials. Specific cautions:
- Dairy allergy: avoid entirely — this is concentrated milk protein.
- Lactose intolerance: colostrum contains lactose; many users tolerate small doses, but GI symptoms are possible.
- Pregnancy and nursing: insufficient supplement-specific safety data; skip it unless your clinician says otherwise.
- Immunocompromised individuals or anyone on immunosuppressive therapy: involve your care team before adding immune-active supplements.
- Competitive athletes: colostrum contains growth factors including IGF-1, and the World Anti-Doping Agency has explicitly discouraged its use even though it isn’t formally banned. Tested athletes should treat it as a gray-zone product and consult their federation’s guidance.
Bottom Line
Bovine colostrum has modest, real evidence for supporting the gut barrier during heavy training and a mixed signal for fewer respiratory symptom days in athletes — at 10-60 g/day, doses most consumer products don’t approach.
